Here's what most people don't think about when they picture a new lawn - the work that happens before a single piece of sod ever hits the ground. Proper prep is everything. Skip it, and you end up with an uneven lawn, poor drainage, and sod that struggles to root.

At this Pearl Lake property, we're using a skid steer to grade and smooth the soil across the entire install area. That machine does a lot more than just move dirt. It lets us level the surface precisely, break up compacted ground, and create the kind of bed that sod actually wants to root into. No shortcuts here.

You can also see the soil has been worked down to a clean, dark base. That's the goal. Loose, graded topsoil gives the sod direct contact with the earth below - which is what drives fast, healthy root establishment. A tight, compacted surface would slow that process down significantly.

We also flag irrigation heads and other utilities before we ever fire up the equipment. That blue flag you can spot is exactly that - making sure nothing gets hit or disrupted during the grading process. It's a small detail, but it matters a lot.

This lakeside yard is going to look completely different once the sod goes down. The groundwork is solid, the grade is clean, and the property is set up for a lawn that takes off strong right from day one.
